Young people at the ballet

Not like in Pennsylvania.

On our last night in Kiev, we attended the ballet, Romeo and Juliet. What struck me more than anything was all the young people there. Young, couples, teenagers even, on dates and with friends all dressed in their finest.

There are times, when attending the symphony or ballet at Heinz Hall, that I try to count the number of people in the audience who don't have gray hair. I think one factor here is the ticket prices. Here students get a discount but people in their 20s and 30s, who are at low-end of pay scales and are just struggling to pay bills, don't. In Kiev, ballet tickets were under $20, our guide, Sveta told us. The ballet, the opera, the symphony are all affordable and so the young people come.
