Proud to be a Pittsburgher

My good friend, Cheryl, thought I needed a night out, so she bought me a ticket to see Donnie Iris on the Gateway Clipper on St. Patrick's Day.

"It's D-A-W-N-I-E, if you're saying it in Pittsburgh," my friend, Cheryl, said, when I asked her if it would be okay to write about our night out.

Cheryl is the ultimate fan and arrived early to get a table on the second balcony of the boat. In the time before the show started, she talked to "Dawnie" with the other guests.

"It's D-A-W-N-I-E, if you're saying or writing it in Pittsburgh," my friend Cheryl said.

"Did you see the PBS special?" my friend Cheryl asked the guy sitting at the table next to us, who it turns out, was an even more devoted fan than she was. The guy's name is Rick Porter and he was sitting with several friends who had driven in from Kentucky and New Jersey just for the concert.

"I own the DVD," Porter said.

Earlier that day, Porter had written a song for Iris and brought it with him to the concert. After Dawnie took the stage, Porter kept yelling "Dawnie, I gotta song for ya."

Once the music started, we fell into the rhythm that is the Donnis Iris concert, head bobbing to Love is like a Rock and Ah Leah, drinking IC Light and watching the guy on the floor beneath us, in the Steeler sweatshirt, cradling his own bucket of Iron City

About an hour into the show, two women at a table on the other side of us got into a fight. I turned around in time to see the girl who was standing against the railing toss her beer into the face of a woman behind her. Next, the girl near the railing tried to pick up the table and throw it at the now beer-soaked girl, but the table was really heavy, so she just kind of pushed it at her.

The police officer came and that was all we saw of the girl near the railing for a while.
Toward the end of the evening, several of us walked onto the deck to watch the moon light up the Ohio River.

Porter, the Donnie fan who wrote the song, agreed shared his lyrics with me. They should be sung to the tune of the Irish song, "Oh Danny Boy."

Ahh Donnie Boy
the fans, the fans are callin'
From Glenshaw and down to Beaver Falls

Tis' St. Patty's Day and we need more green beer
and only you can make it go down best

And you came back when the Steelers won the Super Bowl
And Sid the kid makes Jagr look like crap

We come to hear you sing, Ah Leah!
Oh Donnie Boy Donnie Boy
We love you so.
