Off to Kiev
The Observer-Reporter agreed to participate in an exchange with Melitipolskii Vedemosti, a twice-weekly newspaper in Melipol, Ukraine. And this afternoon, staff writer Heidi Price and I are flying to Kiev, by way of Frankfurt, Germany. From Kiev, we'll take an overnight train to Melitopol, which is near the Sea of Azov about 370 miles southeast of the capital.
We have been warned that they are - like most of Russia - experiencing a cold snap. Blizzard conditions are expected in Kiev Saturday, when we arrive, and tempertures may dip to as low as 17 below zero.
I'll do my best to update this blog from there, but it's not likely to be regular, because although computers and e-mail are widely used, Internet access there is difficult and expensive.
One of our functions there will be to help select three interns from that newspaper who will work at the Observer-Reporter for two weeks in the spring. That experience should be a good one for both our employees and our readers.
Until the opportunity to write again arrives, I'll just say...
Da sviedanya.
